Curse Breaker series review - Brigid Kemmerer

The Curse Breaker series by Brigid Kemmerer consists of three books. The story is a re-telling of the fairy-tale Beauty and the Beast. It follows the journey of a prince who has been cursed and is in need of a woman who loves him to break it. As the story flows into the second book, comparisons to the fairy-tale are very slim, as the content of the book has completely new ideas. However, similarities could be found again in the third novel.

Beauty and the Beast has always been my favourite fairy-tale, and so this book was already a favourite as soon as I began reading it! At some points, I admit that I enjoyed this version of the tale compared to the original one! The Curse breaker series was filled with so much more action, adventure and love that it was quite difficult not to love it. As I read the next books, I enjoyed it more than the previous ones. I suppose this is because more character development was displayed in the later books, and so I could understand and relate more easily to the characters then.

I loved the fact that the author was so innovative with her story, despite it being a retelling. She makes the readers see that there can be so much more than the simple tale that we all know. I believe that the ending in the last novel was spectacular and satisfactory; there was no urge to know more, even though I would like to read more about the characters.

Her talent of ending the first two books on cliff hangers is absolutely wonderful, despite it leaving me screaming after completing them! A lovely fact is that the author included this talent throughout her writing, which keeps the reader in constant suspense and wanting to know more! I loved Kemmerer’s writing, from her descriptions to her dialogues; they all made me feel so close to the characters and a part of the story! This is a trait that I really look out for when reading. I really enjoy easily being able to get submerged in a book.

I appreciated the fact that all four of the main characters points of views were described in the last book. I thought that it was fitting for the finale, as the first two were described in the first while, and the latter in the second. This gave me a chance to really know more about these characters as they are placed in different scenarios and allowed me to empathize with them and understand their actions.

If you love fairy-tale retellings, this is a series that you definitely need to read! It has all the ingredients for the perfect fantasy novel!
