Six of Crows consists of two books in the series. The story follows 6 teenagers who live in the Barrel in the city of Ketterdam, as they help each other take risks to achieve a goal that will help them each achieve their own specific agendas. With action, tears, love and betrayal, these two books will have you hooked and wanting more.
From the beginning of the first book, till the end of the second, this duology had me completely captured by the story. The plotline was something new that captivated me and made it difficult to put the book down. The author brings in unique aspects that will keep you intrigued, and characters that will either have you smiling from ear to ear or wanting to pull your hair out with frustration.
The writing style of the books were simply wonderful. The words had a special way of making you want to turn just one more page and had me constantly thinking about it when I put the book down. Bardugo has a talent for creating perfect imagery to make it easy for the reader to completely immerse themselves in the book.
The characterization in the novels were amazing! I found myself falling in love with each of the characters. The author made this easy by taking time to develop each character’s personality, as well their back stories. I enjoyed the fact that the author created a very diverse character group, as this made reading the novel very interesting. I also loved that we could gain deeper insight into each of the characters minds through their individual chapters in the books.
The only issue that I had with the novel was the fact that the world building was not as good as I’d expected, and the only reason I found it easy to adapt to the story was the fact that I had first watched the TV series. However, this is the second series that the author wrote that takes place in the same world, and therefore I suggest either reading the Shadow and Bone series or watching the TV series before you read this duology!
If you’re looking for an adventurous, gripping and intriguing fantasy book, then the Six of Crows duology is for you!
