This debut novel was one that left me in awe and wanting more. At first, I had no words to describe it besides amazing! It is extremely well-written and pulls you in right from the beginning. The author captivated me by jumping right into the plot, and not wasting words on unnecessary information.
The plot is well thought through, and is unique. The fact that the mystery killer was left unknown until the end, with events that constantly keep the reader's mind whirring, is bound to keep you intrigued. The main character, Pippa, is well portrayed throughout. Holly Jackson made sure to include her personality in even the smallest of aspects. It most certainly helped that the people Pippa surrounded herself with complimented her and helped further display her true character. My ultimate favorite aspect was that Pippa started off the project believing that she was a ‘good girl’, but as time progressed, she kept on second-guessing this. Therefore, whilst unveiling the facts of the case at hand, Pippa’s true character was brought out as well. This highlighted that the story focused on not only the project, but also the life of a teenager.
The fact that the author could so easily change from Pippa’s daily routine to her detective life, all the while connecting them both, pulls the reader in so much more; it is truly amazing that the author does this so well. The daily logs and interviews that are in different fonts, made it seem as if the reader is the detective, and builds that personal bond between the character and reader.
A story that carries you on a journey of finding the truth about the case, but also on a road to finding your true self when put in different situations. A must-read to get your detective skills up and running!
