‘The Spanish Promise’ was subject to an airport buy, as the title had instantly caught my eye while doing some book browsing before my flight. It gives off a sense of mystery and wonder, and rapidly pulls you to read further; which brings me to the blurb of the book. The first paragraph had me taken, and I couldn’t resist buying it.
This was the first time reading work by Karen Swan, so I wasn’t sure on what to expect, but from the first few chapters I was pulled into the world of Charlotte Fairfax (the main character) by the fact that this is one of those books that is set in two time periods. I love these kinds of books because I feel that it gives the reader a bigger picture of how the characters end up in the situations they do. At first, it did become a bit confusing as I wasn’t really sure on where the story was going during one of the time periods; but I learned to love that style as I neared the end.
Even though I was left puzzled in the beginning, there were many moments towards the end where I had “aahh now it makes sense!” moments. These parts prove to be the best since it feels as if youre getting closer to the bottom of a detective case; it only adds more to the mystery of the storyline. It was definitely a plot that kept me rooted to the book.
I really enjoyed the fact that a major historical event was included in the book, since I get to learn something new as well as enjoy a good book. It also makes the characters appear more realistic because they were a part of an incident that actually occurred.
I’m really looking forward to reading more of Karen Swan’s work! Have you read any of her other books? If so, what were your thoughts?
Three words to describe the book:
Seizing. Attention-grabbing. Exciting.
